As a plant grows it constantly sheds fine root hairs, and in a recirculating system that dead tissue has nowhere to go. Left to rot it feeds pathogens and drives dissolved oxygen down. Zyme's enzymes digest it into simple sugars instead, which the plant and the beneficial microbes in the medium can both use.

Zyme or Kleanse, and Why You Might Run Both

Both get described as cleaning the root zone, which is true and useless, because they clean two completely different kinds of mess.

Zyme deals with organic matter. Dead roots, shed tissue, decaying plant material. It works biologically, using enzymes to digest that debris into simple sugars.

Kleanse deals with mineral salts. Accumulated calcium, magnesium, iron and other cations left behind by your feed. It works chemically, using citric acid to dissolve those deposits so they can be flushed out.

An enzyme will not touch a calcium deposit, and citric acid will not digest a dead root. So they aren't alternatives, and neither one replaces the other.
