We build every kit in growing order: root zone, then environment, then light, then nutrients. Dial them in, in that order, and most problems never start.
What the Grow Tent Kit Builder does
Most grow tent kits are just a tent, light and fan. Our free Grow Tent Kit Builder builds the complete kit, with flat $99 shipping to VIC, NSW, SA and ACT. Answer three questions (experience, budget and tent size) and it adds the hydroponic system, nutrients, pH Down and Bluelab meters, sized to your tent. Each line says why it's there, and you can remove anything you already own.
How every kit is built
Growing order comes first
Every kit is built root zone first, then environment, then light, then nutrients, then meters. Dial them in, in that order, and most problems never start.
Nothing extra goes in
Extra products just add variables that make problems harder to diagnose. The only extra bottle we add is for preventive maintenance, like a root zone cleaner or an oxygen additive, because it stops root rot and biofilm before they start. Your experience is the only answer that removes a job from the kit. Budget and space only change which product does each job.
Light is sized from coverage, not watts
LED fixtures are matched to SANlight's own coverage figures, aiming for 0.9 to 1.4 times your floor area with the fewest fixtures. Leafy greens get a light sized to their trays instead, because lettuce needs about a third of the light flowering plants do. Every grow tent light in the builder runs at 2.0 µmol/J or better.
Ventilation follows the tent
Tents up to 80cm get 125mm ducting, up to 120cm get 150mm, up to 150cm get 150mm (200mm on Best gear or HPS), and larger tents get 200mm. The fan, carbon filter and duct all match that size, and the speed controller matches the fan's motor.
First grows get the simplest system
Never grown kits use an AutoPot, which is gravity fed with no pump or timer to fail. Leafy greens are the exception: they get NFT, which has a pump that runs nonstop, as it's the standard system for lettuce and herbs. First grows also get a reservoir cleaner.
Heat decides LED or HPS
Lean budgets get HPS for the lower upfront cost, except in QLD, WA and SA, where summer heat makes LED the better choice. HPS isn't offered in tents under 100cm, because the smallest HPS we stock is 600W, or for leafy greens on any budget.
A complete kit versus a grow tent package
Most grow tent packages sold in Australia are the tent alone, or a tent with a light and fan. A complete kit from the builder also includes:
- The root zone system and its growing medium.
- Nutrients, sized 1L for up to 4 plants and 5L above that.
- GT pH Down and pH 4 and 7 calibration buffers.
- Bluelab meters: a pH pen and EC pen, or a Combo Meter on Balanced and Best gear builds past a first grow.
- A carbon filter in every kit, plus hangers and a timer with every light.

What each tent size gets
| Tent | LED | HPS | Duct | Air circulation | Room for (fruiting / one big plant) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 80x80cm | 1 x SANlight EVO 3-80 | Not offered | 125mm | Clip fan | 2 / 1 |
| 120x60cm | 1 x SANlight EVO 4-120 | 1 x 600W | 150mm | Clip fan | 2 / 1 |
| 120x90cm | 1 x SANlight EVO 5-120 | 1 x 600W | 150mm | Clip fan | 3 / 2 |
| 120x120cm | 1 x SANlight EVO 5-120 | 1 x 600W | 150mm | Clip fan | 4 / 2 |
| 150x80cm | 1 x SANlight EVO 5-120 | 1 x 600W | 150mm or 200mm | Wall fan | 4 / 2 |
| 145x145 and 150x150cm | 1 x SANlight EVO 150 Set | 1 x 1000W | 150mm or 200mm | Wall fan | 7 / 4 |
| 240x120cm | 2 x SANlight EVO 5-120 | 2 x 600W | 200mm | Wall fan | 9 / 5 |
Room for is based on floor space: 0.3m² per fruiting plant and 0.5m² for one big plant. The system in your kit may hold fewer, and the kit panel shows exactly how many. Leafy greens are different: the builder fills the tent with NFT trays that hold 10 lettuce or herb plants each, and sizes the light to the trays.
Clone and seedling kits
Choose Clones and seedlings and the builder switches to clone tents: 80x60cm (HOMEbox R80S) or 125x65cm (HOMELab Clonelab V2). Kits include:
- A fluorescent troffer with two Osram daylight tubes and hangers, one per shelf in the two-level tent, on an 18 on, 6 off timer. Best gear builds get a SANlight FLEX II LED instead.
- An X-Stream aeroponic cloner, 12 sites on lean budgets and 20 otherwise. First grows get rockwool cubes under the dome instead.
- A propagation dome, Clonex gel and Clone Solution, a steriliser and a clip fan.
- THC Grow A+B, started once roots show and when the first set of true leaves open, at 0.6 to 0.8 EC. Balanced and Best gear builds past a first grow add Dutch Fest Root Mass Enhancer.
- No extraction fan.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need for a complete grow tent setup?
A tent, a light sized to the tent, ventilation (fan, carbon filter, duct and speed controller), a root zone system with its growing medium, nutrients, pH Down, calibration buffers, and pH and EC meters.
What size LED do I need for a 120x120 grow tent?
One SANlight EVO 5-120 (340W). It covers 120x120cm on its own. On a lean budget outside QLD, WA and SA, the builder suggests one 600W HPS instead.
Is LED or HPS better in an Australian grow tent?
LED costs more upfront, costs less to run and puts less heat in the tent. HPS costs less to buy. In QLD, WA and SA we use LED on every budget because of summer heat. The builder's LED and HPS switch shows how much less power the LED uses in your kit.
What size fan and carbon filter do I need for my grow tent?
It depends on the tent's longest side: 125mm up to 80cm, 150mm up to 120cm, 150mm or 200mm up to 150cm, and 200mm above that. The carbon filter and duct always match the fan.
How many plants fit in a 120x120 grow tent?
Up to 4 fruiting plants such as tomatoes or chillies, or 2 if you're growing one big plant style, based on floor space. For leafy greens, two NFT trays fit with room to reach in, which holds 20 lettuce or herb plants.
What's the easiest hydroponic system for beginners?
An AutoPot. It's gravity fed with no pump or timer in the root zone, so there's less to go wrong. For leafy greens the builder uses NFT instead. It has a pump that runs nonstop, so check it daily, but lettuce and herbs grow fast and make an easy first crop.
Do I need a pH meter and an EC meter?
Yes. Every hydroponic grower needs both to dial in reservoir EC and pH, test runoff, and track pH drift over time. Every kit includes Bluelab meters and pH 4 and 7 buffers, because you can't diagnose a problem you can't measure.
How much does a complete grow tent kit cost in Australia?
At October 2026 prices, complete grow tent kits start at under $1,900 and clone kits start at under $1,000. Prices update live with our stock.
Can I build a kit for clones and seedlings?
Yes. Choose Clones and seedlings and the builder uses a clone tent, a fluorescent propagation light (a SANlight FLEX II LED on Best gear), a cloner or dome, and Clonex.
What if I already own some of the gear?
Tick "I have this" on any item. It comes out of the kit and the total.
Is there flat-rate shipping on grow tent kits and heavy orders?
Yes. Orders over 25kg ship for a flat $99 to VIC, NSW, SA and ACT. That covers complete grow tent kits from our Grow Tent Kit Builder. QLD, WA, NT, TAS and rural addresses get a freight quote within 24 hours.
Is a cheap grow tent package enough to start?
Most packages leave out the root zone system, nutrients, pH Down and meters. You can't grow hydroponically without them, so you end up buying them separately anyway.
