CYCO Dr. Repair

CYCO Dr. Repair is a Platinum Series additive built around chelated iron and fast-acting nitrogen, formulated to correct chlorosis where the cause is a genuine iron shortage. Iron is a required component in chlorophyll production, and without it new leaves come through pale and yellow between the veins while the veins themselves stay green.

We'd rather sell you nothing than sell you the wrong fix, so here's the honest position. Most chlorosis in a hydroponic system is not caused by a lack of iron in the reservoir. It's caused by pH sitting where iron can't be taken up.

Iron availability collapses as pH rises. Above roughly 6.5 it converts to forms the plant simply cannot absorb, no matter how much is in the solution. That's why a grower can add iron, see no change, add more, and still see no change. The iron was never the problem.

This matters doubly here, because the iron in Dr. Repair is chelated with EDTA. EDTA is a good chelator in the acidic range and holds iron in solution reliably below about pH 6.5, but its grip weakens as pH climbs. Above that the complex breaks down and the iron precipitates out as an insoluble hydroxide. So at the exact pH where your plant most needs help getting iron, EDTA-chelated iron is least able to deliver it.

So check pH first. If you're above 6.5, correct that and wait a few days. Very often the yellowing resolves on its own and you've spent nothing. If pH is already in range at 5.5 to 6.5 and new growth is still coming through pale and interveinal, then you have an actual iron shortage and this is the right product.

Which Leaves Are Yellow Tells You What It Is

Iron doesn't move around inside the plant. Once it's in a leaf, it stays there. That single fact does most of the diagnostic work for you.

  • New growth at the top, yellow between green veins: Iron. The plant can't move it up from older leaves, so the newest tissue starves first. This is what Dr. Repair is for.
  • Old lower leaves yellowing evenly, from the bottom up: Nitrogen. Mobile, so the plant strips it from old growth to feed new. Dr. Repair's 3% nitrogen helps here, but a base nutrient adjustment is usually the better answer.
  • Old lower leaves, yellow between green veins: Magnesium, not iron. Same interveinal pattern but on the wrong leaves. Dr. Repair contains no magnesium and won't fix it. See our Cal-Mag guide instead.

Worth stating plainly, because some retailers claim otherwise: Dr. Repair contains no calcium and no magnesium. It is not a Cal-Mag substitute. Check the guaranteed analysis below.

How and When to Use

Use as needed rather than as a permanent part of every feed, once you've confirmed pH is in range and the pattern points to iron. Add to the reservoir at your usual mixing point, then recheck pH after mixing. Repeat after a week if new growth still comes through pale, and taper off once normal colour returns.

One note on the nitrogen. Dr. Repair's nitrogen comes from urea, which needs microbial conversion before plants can use most of it. That happens readily in soil and coco, where there's biological life to do the work. In a clean recirculating system there's far less of it, so expect the iron to do most of the visible work rather than the nitrogen.

My leaves are yellow. Do I need Dr. Repair?

Check pH first. Most chlorosis in hydroponics is caused by pH above 6.5 locking iron out rather than by a shortage of iron in the reservoir. Correct pH into the 5.5 to 6.5 range and wait a few days. If new top growth is still coming through pale and yellow between green veins, then it's a genuine iron shortage and Dr. Repair is the right fix.

Does Dr. Repair work at high pH?

Poorly. The iron is chelated with EDTA, which holds iron reliably below about pH 6.5 and progressively loses its grip above that, dropping the iron out of solution as an insoluble hydroxide. Adding it to a reservoir running at 7 mostly wastes it. Fix pH first.

Can I use Dr. Repair for a Cal-Mag problem?

No. Dr. Repair contains no calcium and no magnesium, whatever you may have read elsewhere. Magnesium deficiency looks similar to iron deficiency, interveinal yellowing in both cases, but shows on the older lower leaves rather than new growth. That needs a Cal-Mag product, not this.

How do I tell iron deficiency from nitrogen deficiency?

By which leaves go yellow and how. Iron is immobile, so it shows on new top growth, yellow between green veins. Nitrogen is mobile, so the plant pulls it from old leaves to feed new ones, and yellowing starts evenly on the lower leaves and works up.

Is Dr. Repair used continuously or only when needed?

Only when needed. Once colour and normal growth return, taper off and go back to your standard feed. Running iron continuously when there's no shortage adds EC for no benefit.

Can I use CYCO Dr. Repair in soil as well as hydroponics?

Yes, and the urea nitrogen actually performs better in soil and coco, where microbial life converts it into forms the plant can use. In soil, high pH is still the most common cause of iron chlorosis, so the same advice applies.
