Classic interveinal chlorosis is more strongly tied to magnesium, while calcium problems usually show up in new growth and growing points instead. A true combined deficiency can show both patterns at once.

How This Differs From a Straight Magnesium Deficiency

A magnesium-only deficiency shows the classic interveinal chlorosis on older leaves, with new growth staying relatively normal because magnesium is mobile enough to be pulled from older tissue to support new growth.

You'll see the same interveinal chlorosis on older leaves, but also distorted or irregular new leaves, brown spotting on developing tissue, and weak growing tips, since calcium doesn't move the same way magnesium does and can't be redirected from old growth to new. If you're only seeing the older-leaf yellowing with no new growth issues, magnesium alone is the more likely single cause. If both patterns show up together, especially on RO or soft water, treat it as a combined problem.

What Interveinal Chlorosis Looks Like

The pattern starts as subtle lightening between the leaf veins while the veins themselves stay green. As it progresses, the contrast sharpens, sometimes developing rust-coloured spotting in more advanced cases.

Magnesium-related chlorosis typically starts on older or lower leaves first, since the plant can relocate magnesium from old tissue to new growth when supply is tight. Calcium-related symptoms behave the opposite way, showing up in new leaves, growing tips and root tips first, since calcium moves largely through water flow and can't be redirected from established tissue.

This is also worth distinguishing from nutrient burn, which shows as dry, sharply defined damage at leaf tips and margins rather than the softer interveinal pattern, and from iron deficiency, which produces a similar interveinal look but usually starts on the newest leaves rather than the oldest.

Why Reverse Osmosis Water Increases the Risk

RO filtration strips out most dissolved minerals, including the calcium and magnesium that would otherwise come from your tap water. That's genuinely useful for consistent, predictable feeding, but it also removes minerals your base nutrient might be assuming are already present.

Not every nutrient program needs the same response here. Some are specifically formulated for low-mineral or RO water and already include extra calcium and magnesium, in which case adding a full supplemental dose on top can push your total mineral balance too high. Check what your base nutrient actually contains before assuming you need to add anything.

Why Naturally Soft Water Does the Same Thing

Naturally soft water, as opposed to water that's been through a domestic ion-exchange softener, is simply low in calcium and magnesium due to its source. If you're on Melbourne, Sydney or Canberra water, all genuinely soft by Australian standards, this is worth factoring in from the start of a grow rather than waiting for symptoms to show up.

Softened water from a household ion-exchange system is a different situation entirely, since the softening process typically replaces calcium and magnesium with sodium, which can make that water unsuitable for hydroponic use even though it's technically "soft" too. Don't assume all soft water behaves the same way.

Why High-Intensity LED Lighting Raises Cal-Mag Demand

Stronger lighting supports faster growth when everything else, temperature, humidity, nutrition, is also dialled in. Faster growth means more new tissue being produced, which means a higher total nutrient demand, including calcium and magnesium specifically since both are heavily involved in new cell wall and chlorophyll development.

The light itself doesn't cause deficiency though. It exposes a marginal supply that was already borderline under weaker lighting. Calcium uptake is also tied closely to transpiration, so a reservoir with adequate calcium can still produce calcium-related symptoms if humidity is too high, airflow is poor, or the roots are struggling for another reason entirely. Don't add Cal-Mag purely because you've upgraded to stronger lights. Check the whole system first.

Test your source water first with a digital EC meter. A very low starting EC suggests low mineral content generally, though it won't tell you specifically how much calcium versus magnesium is present.
