Quick Answer

  • Measures pH and temperature directly in soil, coco coir and rockwool, without traditional slurry testing.
  • Double-junction probe reduces contamination and extends probe lifespan versus standard single-junction electrodes.
  • Best suited to growers who want in-media readings rather than a runoff or reservoir-only pH check.
  • Ships free from within Australia to VIC, NSW, QLD, SA and ACT.

Bluelab Soil pH Pen. Direct Root Zone pH & Temperature Measurement Tool

The Bluelab Soil pH Pen measures pH and temperature directly in soil, coco coir, rockwool and nutrient solutions. It replaces slurry testing, so you read what's actually happening at the root zone instead of mixing a sample and hoping it represents the pot.

The double-junction pH probe keeps readings stable and resists the reference contamination that shortens the life of single-junction electrodes. The temperature sensor reads at the same time, so one insertion gives you both numbers.

The storage cap doubles as a dibber, which lets you make a clean insertion point and take repeatable readings from the same depth without tearing through roots. The cap holds KCl storage solution to keep the probe hydrated between uses, and that's what preserves accuracy over months rather than weeks.

Key Benefits

  • Direct root zone pH measurement without slurry testing. Reads pH in the growing media itself, which removes both the time cost and the sampling error of slurry and pour-through methods.
  • Simultaneous pH and temperature measurement. One insertion captures both parameters, so you're not carrying a separate thermometer.
  • Double-junction pH probe. Reduces reference contamination and extends working life compared with standard single-junction electrodes.
  • Works in soil, coco, rockwool and nutrient solutions. Covers the common hydroponic and soil-based media without swapping tools.
  • Dual-purpose storage cap and dibber. The cap makes the insertion point and stores the probe wet, so it's one item to keep track of instead of two.
  • Waterproof construction. Bluelab builds the pen fully waterproof rather than water resistant, so rinsing it under a tap or dropping it in a reservoir won't kill it.
  • Backlit display. Readable in a dark grow room without a torch in your other hand.

How It Works

  • Insert the probe directly into soil or growing media. Use the dibber cap to make a clean insertion point, then push the probe down to the root zone.
  • The sensor reads pH and temperature together. The double-junction electrode and temperature sensor capture both at the point of insertion.
  • Readings appear straight away on the backlit screen. No app, no pairing, no phone needed.
  • The KCl cap keeps the probe hydrated between uses. A dry pH electrode is a dead pH electrode, so the filled cap does the single most important bit of maintenance for you.
  • Two-point calibration with a 30-day reminder. Calibrate against pH 4.0 and pH 7.0 buffers. The pen prompts you at 30-day intervals so it doesn't quietly drift.

System Features

  • Dual-purpose storage cap and dibber. Insertion tool and KCl storage cap in one.
  • Double-junction pH electrode. Reduces reference contamination and extends probe life.
  • Integrated temperature sensor. Simultaneous temperature reading at the root zone.
  • Backlit LCD display. Clear output in low-light grow rooms.
  • Two-point calibration with reminder. Prompts at 30-day intervals.
  • Waterproof housing. Built for wet and humid grow environments.
  • Compact handheld design. Light enough to carry around a room of pots.

Measurement Capabilities

  • pH. Direct root zone readings in soil, coco coir, rockwool and nutrient solutions.
  • Temperature. Root zone temperature captured at the same insertion.

Applications

  • Direct root zone pH testing in soil and coco
  • Digital soil pH meter for hydroponic substrate and growing media
  • Coco coir pH testing for recirculating and run-to-waste systems
  • Root zone pH monitoring for nutrient management in indoor growing
  • Soil and substrate pH measurement for commercial and hobby growers

Ideal For

  • Soil and coco growers. Substrate readings instead of slurry testing, which is where most root zone pH data goes wrong.
  • Catching lockout early. Root zone pH data lets you spot and correct a lockout before the leaves tell you about it.
  • Mixed media systems. One pen across soil, coco, rockwool and solution.
  • Repeatable record keeping. Consistent insertion depth from the dibber cap means readings you can actually compare week to week.

What Sets It Apart

Most pH pens measure solution. This one measures media, which is a different job. Slurry testing dilutes your sample and pour-through tells you about the runoff rather than the root zone, so both put a step between you and the number you want. The Soil pH Pen removes that step. The double-junction probe, KCl storage system and dibber cap are what make it hold accuracy across a season of daily use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I calibrate the Soil pH Pen?

Calibrate before every use during an active grow, or every 2 to 3 days at minimum. It's a two-point calibration against pH 4.0 and pH 7.0 buffer solutions, and the pen reminds you at 30-day intervals. Calibration matters more than anything else you do with this pen, because an uncalibrated meter gives you a confident number that happens to be wrong.

How do I store it properly?

Wet, always. The KCl storage cap that comes with the pen exists for exactly this. If a pH electrode dries out, the glass membrane is permanently damaged and no amount of calibration brings it back. Top the cap up with Bluelab KCl storage solution as needed and store the pen at room temperature out of direct sunlight.

Is it waterproof, and can I use it outdoors?

It's fully waterproof rather than just splash resistant, so rinsing it under a tap or dropping it in a reservoir won't damage it. Bluelab doesn't publish an IP rating for this model, so we won't quote one. Treat it as a handheld tool you can get thoroughly wet, not as equipment to leave mounted outside in the weather.

Does it measure EC as well?

No, pH and temperature only. If you need nutrient strength too, the Bluelab Combo Meter covers pH, EC and temperature in one unit, and the Bluelab Pulse reads EC and moisture directly in the substrate the way this pen reads pH.

What if the readings look wrong?

Recalibrate with fresh buffer first, since old or contaminated calibration fluid causes more bad readings than anything else. Rinse the probe with deionised or distilled water between steps. If it's still inconsistent, check the probe for damage or buildup. pH probes are consumable and typically last 12 to 18 months with good care.

Does it qualify for free shipping?

Yes. At $274.95 and 0.6kg it clears the $150 threshold and sits well under the 3kg cap, so it ships free to VIC, NSW, QLD, SA and ACT. WA, NT, Tasmania and remote areas are quoted separately. Most orders to those five states arrive within 2 to 5 business days.
