The Apera pH & Temperature Pen measures pH and temperature in hydroponic nutrient solutions, water systems and general water testing. Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I calibrate it?

Before every use during an active grow, or every 2 to 3 days at minimum. Calibration is a two-point job against pH 4.00 and 7.00 buffers, and the pen recognises the buffer automatically. Use fresh buffer each time. Reusing calibration fluid that's been open on a shelf is the fastest way to calibrate your pen to the wrong number with full confidence.

How do I store it properly?

Wet, and specifically not in distilled or RO water. Use pH 4 storage solution or a dedicated electrode storage solution. Storing a pH probe in pure water strips ions out of the glass membrane and wrecks it, which is the same outcome as letting it dry out. Keep it at room temperature away from direct sunlight.

Will it read my RO water accurately?

Not reliably, and this catches a lot of growers out. pH pens need ions in the water to read against, so distilled, deionised and unremineralised RO water can give unstable or wrong readings. It reads your nutrient solution fine, because that's full of ions. Test the mix rather than the raw RO.

Is it waterproof?

Yes, IP67 rated for both water and dust, and Apera builds these pens to float. You can rinse it under a tap and a drop into the reservoir isn't fatal. IP67 covers temporary immersion, so it isn't a probe to leave sitting in a tank permanently.

Does it measure EC as well?

No, pH and temperature only. For nutrient strength you'd want a dedicated EC pen alongside it, or a combo meter like the Bluelab Combo if you'd rather have pH, EC and temperature in one unit.
