Carbon Filters
Choosing a carbon filter
A carbon filter is the only thing that actually removes grow room odour. Fans move air and ozone masks smells, but only activated carbon traps the compounds that cause them. All three filters here use Australian RC412 virgin activated carbon, which has more surface area and lasts longer than the cheap imported carbon in most budget filters.
Match the filter to your fan. The filter's flange should match your fan's diameter, and its rated airflow should be equal to or higher than your fan's. A filter that's too small for the fan chokes airflow, makes the fan louder and wears the carbon out faster. Our inline fan and carbon filter sizing guide walks through it step by step, and you can browse fans in our ventilation and climate control range.
Placement. Hang the filter inside the tent at the top, where the warmest and smelliest air collects, and have the fan pull air through it and push it out. Keep humidity under about 70% where you can, because damp carbon loses effectiveness quickly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a carbon filter last?
Typically 12 to 18 months, depending on how many hours it runs and how humid the room is. When smell starts coming through at full fan speed, it's time to replace it.
What size carbon filter do I need?
The same flange diameter as your fan, rated for at least the fan's maximum airflow. If you're between sizes, go up rather than down.
Black Ops vs Rhino Pro vs CarboAir?
Black Ops and Rhino Pro are heavy-duty filters built for larger tents and long runtimes. CarboAir 50 is a more compact, lighter build, and its 125mm size is the most affordable way into a quality RC412 filter for a small tent.
Do carbon filters ship free?
Most do. Every size except the Rhino Pro 300×1000 is 12kg or under, so they ship free on orders of $350 or more to VIC, NSW, QLD, SA and ACT. The Rhino Pro 300×1000 weighs 20kg and ships at our bulky freight rate.
