A wilting plant sitting in a full reservoir is one of the more counterintuitive problems in hydroponics, since the obvious assumption, that it needs more water, is usually wrong. If there's plenty of water available and the plant is still wilting, the actual problem is that the roots can't take up what's there.

Why Roots Stop Taking Up Water

Low root zone oxygen. Roots need oxygen to actively take up water and nutrients, it isn't a passive process. A reservoir with poor aeration, particularly in DWC or any system where roots sit directly in solution, can leave roots oxygen-starved even while fully submerged in water. An oversized pot in coco. This one catches people out because it looks like the exact opposite problem. A pot that's too large for the current root system holds far more wet coco than the roots can actually draw down between waterings, so the media at the bottom and centre of the pot stays saturated and starved of oxygen for long stretches. The coco itself feels wet, sometimes genuinely waterlogged, while the plant wilts as though it's dry, because roots sitting in that stagnant, oxygen-poor zone can't function properly, regardless of how much moisture is actually there. It's the same underlying mechanism as low oxygen in a reservoir, just caused by media volume rather than aeration. Sizing the pot to the plant's current root mass, rather than the size it'll eventually need, avoids this entirely.

Root rot. Damaged, rotting roots physically can't take up water even in a full reservoir, since the tissue responsible for absorption has been destroyed. This is one of the most common actual causes behind wilting-despite-water and is closely tied to warm reservoir temperature and low oxygen. High EC. A reservoir running too concentrated increases osmotic pressure around the roots, making it physically harder for the plant to draw in water even though it's surrounded by solution. In media systems, EC concentrates between fertigation events, which is why feeding less often can make this worse rather than better.

Physical stem damage. Damage to the stem itself, from pests, mechanical injury or disease, can restrict water movement up through the plant independent of anything happening at the roots. Inspect the stem directly, particularly near the base, if root health and reservoir conditions all check out normal.

Transplant shock. A plant recently moved between systems or media can wilt temporarily while its root system adjusts, even with everything else correct. This typically resolves within a few days without intervention, and is a different problem to nutrient burn despite looking superficially similar. How to Diagnose It

Feel a drooping leaf between your fingers first. A wet, oxygen-starved root zone gives firm, thick, slightly leathery leaves that curl down as a whole leaf. Genuine drought gives limp, thin, papery leaves. That single check separates the two problems people most often confuse. Then check reservoir temperature, since it's quick to test and connects to several of the causes above. Inspect the roots directly if the system allows it, healthy roots are white or cream and firm, damaged roots are brown or grey with a slimy texture, often with a bad smell. If you're in coco, check whether the pot size actually matches the current root mass rather than assuming bigger is safer. Check EC against target range for the growth stage.
